The objective of this cross-sectional study was to determine and compare the level of the work motivating factors categorized by individual and external elements of the registered nurses at the medicine department of Sapprasitthiprasong hospital, Ubonratchathani province. The motivation-hygiene theory of Hersberg had been applied for this study. The target populations were 105 registered nurses from 11 wards in the medicine department. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires (Cronbach's alpha coefficient = 0.916) during July to September 2007. T-test and ANOVA (One Way Analysis of Variance) statistical programs had been applied to analyze the data. Majority of the population was married female, under 30 years of age. They were registered nurses with 6-10 years of work experience and had family members living in the same house of less than 5 members. The average income was 10,501 to 20,000 baht per month without extra or part-time job. The working hours and overtime jobs (OT) were 8 hours per day and 10-20 hours per week (8 OT per month), respectively. The overall work motivation from personal factors and external factors according to motivation factors was high (3.76), work motivation from responsibility was the highest (4.02). However, work motivation from job promotion was the lowest (3.52). The overall work motivation from personal factors and external factors according to hygiene factor was in medium level (3.29), work motivation from social status was the highest (4.11). Earnings was the lowest (2.60). In terms of individual factors, the work motivation was at medium level and indicated insignificant difference (p-value>0.05). This was except for the aspect of age, which showed a statistical significance (p-value = 0.01). Moreover, the work motivation according to the external factors was in medium level and showed no significant differences between factors (p-value>0.05).
