Objective= The objectives of this study were to explore the prevalence rate of overweight or obesity in psychiatric patients who treated with mood stabilizers; sodium valproate (VPA) and examine the associated factors. Methodology= This study is retro-prospective, cross-sectional study. Ninety-nine patients were enrolled into study. Data such as weight, height, body mass index, waists circumference, hips circumference, arms circumference and factors were collected from medical charts, hospital data date and in-patients at Prasrimahabhodi psychiatric hospital, Ubon ratchathani province during year 2011. Results and discussion= The results showed that the prevalence rate of overweight or obesity in psychiatric patients who treated with mood stabilizers; sodium valproate (VPA) was 37.4%. Higher prevalence rate of overweight or obesity was found in female group (43.2%) compared to male group (32.7%). Moreover, the present of smoking in patient was associated with overweight or obesity in psychiatric patients who treated with mood stabilizers; sodium valproate (VPA) (2 test; p-value = 0.019). None of other associations were found with other factors such as age, gender, dosage form, dosage regimen, co-medications, co-diseases (2 test; p-value > 0.05). Higher prevalence of overweight or obesity in psychiatric patients who treated with mood stabilizers (VPA) compared with prevalence of overweight or obesity in general population. Finally, overweight or obesity is still be the important problem in psychiatry.
