ABSTRACT TITLE : Study on mutagenic activities and antimutagenic activities of some aqueous extracts of edible plants and medicinal plants by Ames Test AUTHORS : Chawanon Pikor Kiattiphan Inthisaeng Chaiwat Ampangtai DEGREE : Bachelor of Pharmacy MAJOR : Pharmacy CHAIRMAN : Assistant Professor Chutinun Prasitpuriprecha KEYWORDS : antimutagenic activities, mutagenic activities, edible plants, medicinal plants, Ames Test This study aimed to investigate the mutagenic activity and antimutagenic activity of ten extracts of edible plants and medicinal plants by Ames test. The crude extracts including Piper sarmentosum Roxb., Moringa oleifera Lam., Sesbania grandiflora (L.) Pers., Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb., Terminalia sp., Tiliacora triandra Diels., Cratoxylum formosum(Jack.) Dyer., Syzygium gratum (Wight) S.N. Mitra var. gratum., Connarus semidecandrus Jack., Polygonum odoratum Lour. The powdered plants was extracted with ethanol. The antimutagenicity on Salmonella typhimurium TA 98 was found in the extracts from 100 mg/ml of Polygonum odoratum Lour. (clear zone 10 mm.). All extracts have no mutagenic activity on Salmonella typhimurium TA98 in the presence of S9-mix with Mutagenicity index (MI) of Piper sarmentosum Roxb., Moringa oleifera Lam., Sesbania grandiflora (L.) Pers., Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb., Terminalia sp., Tiliacora triandra Diels., Cratoxylum formosum(Jack.) Dyer., Syzygium gratum (Wight) S.N. Mitra var. gratum., Connarus semidecandrus Jack. At 0.63, 0.87, 2.48, 1.66, 1.24, 0.11, 0.28, 0.70 and 0.83, respectively. The antimutagenic activity of 2-aminoanthracene (2AA) and 2-anminofluorene (AF2) cannot interplet because Salmonella typhimurium TA 98 was not form colony.
