Eurycoma longifolia is a medicinal plant that possesses numerous pharmacological effects. Due to a highly use as health promoting products, E. longifolia is at risk of extinction. The endophytic fungi are as alternative sources of the bioactive compounds from E. longifolia Objective= To isolate endophytic fungi from E. longifolia and screen the antimicrobial activities of endophyte extracts. Method= E. longifolia was collected from Kaeng Tana in Ubon Ratchathani Province. The endophytic fungi were isolated using surface sterilization technique. The fungal characteristics on the PDA were studied. Phytochemical screening using Thin layer Chromatography (TLC) and evaluation of antimicrobial activity by using disc diffusion of the extracts from the fungal endophytes were conducted. Results= From various parts of E. longifolia, a total of 20 endophytic fungal isolates (EL01-20) were obtained. The extracts that showed antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli were EL20C and EL20M; against Staphylococcus aureus was EL05M; against Pseudomonas aeruginosa were EL05M, EL07M, EL09M and EL14M. Phytochemical screening showed that the alkaloids and quassinoids were the constituents of the extracts. However, none of the extracts showed a similar chemical pattern as E. longifolia. Conclusions= Endophytic fungi isolated from E longifolia exhibited antimicrobial activity. The chemical components detected in the fungal extracts were alkaloids and quassiniods. The antibacterial compounds of the endophytic fungi are different from that of E. longifolia.
