The aquatic plants of the families Nymphaeaceae and Nelumbonaceae are native to Thailand. They have been widely used in Thai traditional medicine as well as consumed as vegetables. Objectives=This study aimed to investigate chemical constituents and antioxidant activity of various parts of three Nymphaea spp. and three varieties of Nelumbo nuciferae G. Methods=The methanolic extracts were analyzed for total phenolic and total flavonoids contents. Antioxidant capacity was evaluated by DPPH and ABTS assay. Results= The total phenolic contents and total flavonoid content of the tested materials ranged from 8.80±1.17 to 143.30±4.53 mg GAE/g dry weight and 1.00±0.04 to 11.35±0.42 mg QE/g dry weight respectively, while total antioxidant capacity by DPPH and ABTS assay ranged from 19.84 ±0.48 to 467.75±1.91 mg TEAC/g dry weight and 14.9±3.54 to 382.2±32.25 mg TEAC/g dry weight respectively. Conclusions= Based on chemical constituents and antioxidant activity the petal of Nymphaea rubra was identified as the best sources of antioxidant among the tested plant materials. The antioxidant capacity of the investigated plants was correlated with the total phenolic contents. This study provided information in development of antioxidant products from thai medicinal plants of the families Nelumbonaceae and Nymphaeaceae.
