ASSESSMENT OF DRUG COUNSELING SERVICE IN OUTPATIENT CLINIC AT PRASRIMAHABHODI PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL KORNKANOK BOONKUMNERD, JIDLADA SRIPLUDKHONG DOCTOR OF PHARMACY PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCES ASST.PROF.NONGLEK KUNAWARADISAI, Ph.D. PSYCHIATRIC PATIENT, DRUG COUNSELING From the result of a survey in 2013, it was found that 14% of Thai populations had been suffered with mental health problems as a chronic or brain disease leading to a seek for continuous self and medical health care. Thus, drug counseling service in these patients is highly important. To study the pattern and the effectiveness of drug counseling service and to evaluate patients’ satisfaction to drug counseling service. This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted during August to December 2015. The subjects were psychiatric patients who were diagnosed by ICD-10 (F00 - F99) and were prescribed with any type of psychiatric medications and were sent to receive a drug counseling service via pharmacist at the outpatient department, Prasrimahabhodi Psychiatric Hospital. The data were collected using self-administered questionnaires and were analyzed by descriptive statistics. Drug counseling was conducted by the clinical pharmacist for each individual patient. There were 92 patients recruited into this study. Patients were divided into three groups. The first group was 39 patients with new and old cases of schizophrenia/depressive disorder. In terms of the first antipsychotic drug, the results revealed that 82.05% of those could identify how to use the medication and what to do while using these medications correctly. Additionally, 86.84% of the subjects in this group could be able to explain how to use the second drug accurately. Overall a total of 84.21% of these patients were able to identify how to use both drugs. The second group of 31 patients receiving lithium showed the accuracy on the explanation about how to use lithium at 90.32%. Of those 22 patients who were identified with adverse drug reactions, the results showed that 81.81% of them could identify the recommendation while facing with these adverse reactions properly. In terms of the satisfaction on drug counseling service by pharmacist, the average score was highly at 4.46.±0.16 (total score of 5.00). Overall, patients werehighly satisfied with drug counseling service from pharmacist. Patients with schizophrenia or depressive disorder including with those on lithium showed the knowledge on how to use their prescribed medicine. For patients with adverse drug reactions, they mostly knew about the recommendation to manage their adverse effects. However, side effects from those medications used in psychiatric patients were the important issues that they still lacked of and needed to be counseled more.
