The objective of thisresearchis to determine the stability of metronidazole extemporaneous suspensions via the physical, chemical and microbiological assessment. All Metronidazole extemporaneous suspensions were prepared in the dose of 50 mg/mL in order to findthe suitable storage conditions for keeping such extemporaneous suspensions. Methods:There were three conditions for keeping metronidazole suspensions in the stability testing including the temperature at4°C, 25 and 40°Cwith 75%RH. The measuring times were set on days 0, 7, 30, 90 and 180.The physical stability testing was pH and viscosity measurement. The drug remaining using HPLC was performed for the chemical stability. Also, the total plate count method was used for the microbiological test. Results: According to the study, the storage time and temperature slightly affected the pH and viscosity of the formulations. The physical appearance exhibited the caking phenomena on day 30 of the study. The amount of drug remaining at various conditions were not less than 80% compared to the initial concentration. No microbiological growth exceeded more than the acceptable value at days 0 and 7. Conclusions: The suitable storage condition of metronidazole extemporaneous suspensions 50 mg/mL is the keeping temperature at 25 °C or below and beyond use date of 7 days.
