Diabetes mellitus (DM) is an important public health problem and the risk of severe complications and major causes of death. Aspirin is recommended to use in DM patients to prevent its consequences.Objectives: To review aspirin use pattern in patients with diabetes mellitus, according to clinical practice guidelines for Diabetes 2014 and identify therapeutic outcome of aspirin used in term of major adverse drug events. Methods:This descriptive restrospectivestudy used an electronic database during 1 October 2014 to 18 March 2016 fromBuntharik Hospital, UbonRatchathani. The ICD 10 code (E10-11) was used to select outpatient with diabetes mellitus without cardiovascular disease.Aspirin use was searched by medication code 59,1205 and gastrointestinal bleeding was searched from text search and ICD10 (K92.2). Results: A total of 1,820 patients with DM was observed. Of these, 59.34% was met the inclusion criteria to use aspirin. However, only 28.70% received aspirin, 48.71%male and51.29%female. Of 40.66% who was met the exclusion criteria to use aspirin, 21.89% received aspirin, 11.11%male and 88.89%female. Regarding therapeutic outcomes, no GI bleeding was observed. Patients who received 300 mg of aspirin and 81 mg of aspirin accounted for 1.27% and 98.37% respectively. Conclusion: This study found that omission of aspirin in DM patients with an indication to use aspirin and using aspirin without indication werehigh.Therefore, rational use of aspirin should be promoted according to clinical practice guidelines.
