Hyperlipidemia is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular diseaseis a major cause of death in Thailand. Statins are first line drug for hyperlipidemia treatment and for prevention of cardiovascular disease in people who have high cardiovascular risk factors.Simvastatin is an expensive value drug and a high volume useddrug inBuntharik hospital; however, this drug have never been evaluated for appropriateness of use. Objective :study appropriateness of use of simvastatin in Buntharik hospital. Methods : This study is a descriptive retrospective study. Subjects werepatients who was prescribed simvastatin from electronics database of Buntharik HospitalduringOctober 1st, 2013 to September 30th, 2015. The data that used for evaluationof appropriateness of use of simvastatin are demographic information, underlying disease information, prescribing information, and laboratory information. Drug evaluation is based on the National List of essential Medicines.Results :Of 1,482 new statins users observed, 507 were male.The average age was 60.XX years old. Patients with 2, 1 and no risk factor accounted for 57.08%, 37.18%, and5.73% respectively. Simvastatin was prescribed with indication in 589 (39.74%) patients,536 for primary prevention and 53 for secondary prevention.Conclusion :Most patients received simvastatin without indications. So hospital administrators should promote rational use of simvastatin based on guidelines from National List of Essential Medicines 2013.
