The aerial part of Elephantopus spicatus were extracted with water and continuously extracted with hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and methanol. The crude extracts were subsequently tested for their biological activities including antioxidant activity by scavenging effect on DPPH radicals, antimicrobial activity using the agar well diffusion method against 6 microorganisms Staphylococcus aureus Staphylococcus epidermidis Salmonella typhimurium Bacillus subtilis Bacillus cereus and Escherichia coli. The extracts exhibited scavenging of DPPH free radical were water methanolic and ethyl acetate extracts with EC50 values of 66.54±2.12, 93.07±7.35 and 131.37±18.31 µg/mL respectively. The water extracts could inhibit the growth of S. aureus S. epidermidis S. typhimurium B. subtilis and B. cereus with MIC value more than 5 mg/ml. Both hexane and ethyl acetate extract of inhibited the growth of S.aureus with MIC value of 2.5 mg/mL and inhibited the growth of S. epidermidis S. typhimurium B. subtilis and B. cereus with MIC value more than 5 mg/mL. The dichloromethane extracts inhibited the growth of B. cereus with MIC value of 2.5 mg/mL and inhibited the growth of S. aureus S. epidermidis S. typhimurium and B. subtilis with MIC value more than 5 mg/mL.The ethyl acetate extracts inhibited the growth of B. cereus with MIC value of 5 mg/mL and inhibited the growth of S. epidermidis S. typhimurium and B. subtilis with MIC value more than 5 mg/mL The methanolic extracts inhibited the growth of S. aureus S. epidermidis B. subtilis and B. cereus with MIC value more than 5 mg/mL. None of the extracts were found to be active against E. coli.
