The objective of this project was to study antimicrobial activities of medicinal plants in the Euphorbia genus, Euphorbia hirta and Euphorbia thymifolia. The methanolic and aqueous extracts of these two plants were tested for antimicrobial activities against 6 microorganisms = Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Propionibacterium acnes, Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Antimicrobial activities were screened using an agar disc diffusion method and subsequently determined for microbial susceptibility by an agar dilution method. It was found that the methanolic extract of E.hirta exerted growth inhibition against S.aureus, B.cereus, S.typhimurium, E.coli and Ps.aeruginosa, and showed potent activities against B.cereus and P.aeruginosa with MIC ≤ 0.3125 mg/mL and MBC > 10 mg/mL. In addition, the aqueous extract of E.hirta could inhibit only the growth of B.cereus. Moreover, both methanolic and aqueous extracts of E.thymifolia showed inhibitory activities against S.aureus, B.cereus, S.typhimurium and E.coli. The potent activities of E.thymifolia were found in methanolic extract against S.aureus, B.cereus, S.typhimurium and E.coli (MIC = 0.625 mg/mL, MBC >10 mg/mL).
