Introduction: Elderly people had problems with the hair such as hair loss, dry scalp and gray hair. There were reports that using shampoo with appropriate herbal ingredients might solve these problems. The herbs for this research used safflower extract to reduce hair loss, gotu kola extract to reduce dry scalp, and white head extract to cover the gray hair. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate the shampoo for elderly people by using the adventage of herbs. Methods: Formulations of elderly shampoo were developed by containing three herbal extracts to prepare suitable formulations. The selected formulations were evaluated the physical appearance, pH, and viscosity by comparing the stability of shampoo after preparation and the formulation stored for 30 days at 4°C, 30°C and 45°C (75% humidity). Also, hair coloring test was evaluated by using upright microscope. Results: The physical appearance of lotion shampoo showed smoothing texture with yellow color. The results of pH measurement found that after preparation, the formulation A and formulation B had pH 6.41±0.11 and pH 5.76±0.00 respectively. Both of formulations were within the specified pH (pH 5.00-7.00). When kept 30 days at various conditions, both of formulations were slightly change within the specified range except for formulation B. Such formulation B kept for 30 days at 4°C had pH 4.88±0.01 which was below the range. The results of viscosity found that formulation A and formulation B had 2,424.67±247.61 cps and 2,119.00±156.35 cps respectively which were within the acceptable range (more than 1,250 cps), but when kept 30 days at various conditions, the formulation B had varied more than the formulation A. The results of hair coloring showed that both formulations can change the hair color similarly to the commercial shampoo. Conclusion: According to formulation A and formulation B, most of the results were similar, but formulation A trends to be more stable in terms of pH and viscosity than formulation B. Therefore, formulation A is appropriate to the formulation development for elderly shampoo in the future.
