The aerial parts of Vernonia cinerea Less. were extracted with hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and methanol. Preliminary screening for antimicrobial activity against 6 microorganism= Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Propionibacterium acnes, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhimurium were performed by agar disc diffusion method. The dichloromethane exhibited antimicrobial activity against all microorganisms. The agar dilution method showed that the dichloromethane extract could inhibit the growth of B. subtilis, P. aeruginosa and S. typhimurium with MIC values of 5 mg/mL and MIC values above 5 mg/mL in S. aureus, P. acnes and E. coli. The antioxidative activity by scavenging of 2,2-diphenyl picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) free radicals showed that the ethyl acetate extract exhibited
