The objective of this study was to develop the test kit for preliminary screening of hardness of drinking water and untreated water for extra-laboratory analysis. Total hardness of water was calculated in term of mg/L of CaCO3 by titrations with EDTA. The test kits were kept at 4, 32, and 45 °C with and without humidity or light protection. Physical and chemical stability of the samples were test periodically for 6 months. The changed in physical character such as color, particle precipitation were assess by observation. The chemically stability was evaluated by analysis the concentration of CaCO3 compared with the initial. It was found that the test kit stored at 32°C and 45 °C were physically changed regarding on the color of indicator. The amount of CaCO3 of test kit stored at 4 °C with control light and humidity was physically and chemically stable within 5 months. The method validation for standard CaCO3 revealed linear concentration relationship with the square of correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.9986 over the concentration range from 50-300 mg/L. The accuracy expressed as % recovery were 102.45 and 106.48 % for intra- and inter-day assay respectively. The precision expressed as % RSD were 0.37 and 0.54 % for intra- and inter-day assay respectively. The limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) were 2.
