The objective of this study was to develop serum containing basil oil for anti-dandruff and anti-hair fall product. Antimicrobial activity of basil oil was investigated using agar dilution method. Basil oil was encapsulated into niosomes by ethanol injection method. The obtained niosomes were then characterized in term of physicochemical properties, stability and in vitro release profiles. Skin irritation is also investigated in healthy volunteers using skin testing device. Results showed that basil oil inhibited the growth of microbials in the following rank order; Malassezia furfur = Candida albican > Staphylococcus epidermidis > Staphylococcus aureus = Propionibacterium acnes with minimal inhibitory concentration value of 0.16 = 0.16 < 0.52 < 2.50 = 2.50 %w/w, respectively. The obtained niosomes had particle size in range of 80 to 160 nm with maintained stability for at least 2 months when kept at 4, 25 and 45◦C. The total encapsulation efficiency of basil oil in niosomes was 99.78%. Basil oil was more slowly released from niosome than unencapsulated system. Basil oil showed drastically skin irritation whereas basil oil encapsulated in niosomes dispersed in serum exhibited no sign of irritation. The system is suitable to be furthered developed as industial as cosmeceutical product.
