The objective of this study was to develop curcumin floating microspheres for the treatment of peptic ulcer. Ethylcellulose was used to prepare microspheres by solvent evaporation method. Floating system was developed by coencapsulation of oil in the micropsheres. Effect of formulation and production parameters on percentage entrapment of curcumin in microspheres was investigated. Floating time as well as size and morphology of microspheres were also investigated. Results showed the obtained microspheres exhibites sphereical shape and were in the size range of 70-190 micrometer. Percentage efficiency of curcumin in the microspheres was 64.02- 97.21 %. Microsphere size increased as the amout of encapsulated oil content increased and thus increased floating time. The maximum encapsulated oil content was 30%. Photos from cross sectional scanning electron microscope showed more porous microsphere structure as the amount of encapsulated oil increased. Microsphere released curcumin in a sustained manner over 24 – 48 hours. Results from this study indicated that careful optimization of formulation as well as production parameter could give desired microsphere size and floating time. The floating system increases gastrict resident time of curcumin in the stomach, thus increase its efficiency in the treatment of peptic ulcer.
