This study aimed to test validity and reliability of medication adherence questionnaire (MAQ) in Thai version and to describe the medication adherence of hypertensive patients at Warinchamrab Hospital, Ubonratchathani. One hundred and six patients were purposively sampled. The inclusion criteria were 20 year old or older, diagnosed with hypertension according to JNC VII criteria. The Thai version of questionnaire was developed from the original English version, Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS), by 2 experts who used forward and backward translation. The questionnaire was pre-tested with 20 patients who were similar to targeted samples. The reliability of the questionnaire measured by Cronbach’s alpha coefficients was 0.566. However, one question and time imposed in the questionnaire were not well understood by the patients. The questionnaire was modified and tested in another 20 patients. The reliability of the modified questionnaire was 0.640. The questionnaire had 4 items. The higher scores indicated better adherence. The results revealed that most were female (58.50%) and between 60 to 69 years old (30.19%). The average adherence score was 3.3. Concurrent validity was analyzed by point bi-serial correlation. It was found that question 1 and question 2 could discriminate adhered and non-adhered patients (rpb= 0.246 และ rpb= 0.240 respectively). A chi-square test did not find any association between adherence score and control of blood pressure among respondents; eliciting shortcoming of the questionnaire. Therefore, further study should be conducted to improve the questionnaire.
